Controlled vs. Automatic Search

Schneider & Shiffrin (1977) showed that two qualitatively different modes of attention coexist in visual search. When targets and distractors come from stable, non-overlapping categories, search becomes automatic: fast, parallel, capacity-free. When they share a category, search stays controlled: serial, effortful, capacity-limited. This task gives a brief taste of each.
