Signal Detection Theory separates sensitivity (d′) from response bias (criterion c). A liberal observer (low c) earns more hits but also more false alarms; a conservative observer does the reverse. d′ measures the signal-to-noise gap independently of criterion placement — a key advance over classical threshold theory.
